In Baja. Light posting (in case you haven't already noticed) until Memorial Day weekend subsides.

Did you catch anything?

J.D: My friend Mark Schubb and I chartered a small boat out of Ensenada and the captain took us into a sea of boiling hungry Barracuda. We caught SO many (no kidding) that we lost count.. we figure about 50-60 of them running 6-10 lbs. It was great. We also picked up about a half-dozen sand bass as we drifted in the surf at the end of the trip. The day before we went out the Yellowtail bite was on pretty good but they decided to dodge us when we went out. That gives us a good reason to go back soon perhaps also hunting down some Albacore!

What on earth are you going to do with so much fish? Do people eat Barracuda? They aren't on the menu in my corner of the world.

O.K. Marc........
I'm waiting for the Barracuda Bar-B-Que!
Did you guys hit the Lobster House in Puerto Nuevo?

Michael: There's no protein excess in Baja. Evcery fish went to the captain who either gave them to friends to make cevice or he sold them to the local fish market. As my friend Mark put it, it was like socialist summer camp. We paid the captain $200 for the right to work our butts off on board cranking in the Barracuda for him to sell while he downed some Tecates. No regrets.
To Bonnie-- oh yeah. After the fish we went to Chela's for some mid-sized 5lb lobsters. This captain we found was terrific and his boat was even better. Maybe you'll have time to come next time out.

Michael,
I caught barracuda, bonefish and tarpon in the mangrove flats when I went to Belize 12 years ago. The barracudas were the only ones we didn't catch and release.

Marc,
Sounds like that captain has a pretty good gig going.

A terrific gig! But he is also a great captain, a very hard worker who really goes all out to find the fish. When ur not travelling in the Middle East sometime we'll coax u down here and take u out on the Baja waters.

Barracudas? How befitting!

I take my son fishing, but I don't believe in the cruelty of using hooks. I tie bread onto the line and let the fish come to the bait and pull in gently until they get close, then I make a quick grab. i then return the fish to its orginal habitat, that way my son learns the value of peaceful non-aggression.

Gawd, steve, gag me with a spoon!

Or smack me with a barracuda! I have to say I am naive enough to actually be sitting here and pondering if Steve was being serious or not. I guess he was... it's still un-friggin-believable! "Peaceful non-aggression" with fish?
P.S. I LOVE the handle Clare Quilty! Best I've ever seen. Just saw Lolita again the other day!
