Here, inside the submarine of the Nevada Democratic campaign, there's the ominous drip drip drip of water. Mostly coming in from Florida and Ohio which both seem to be drifting beyond Kerry's grasp. If that trend continues, he's sunk.
But I write at a moment of true surreal absurdity. Up on stage in front of me is liberal Democratic congresswoman Shelley Berkeley who was easily re-elected tonight. She's been up on the podium heartily self-congratulating herself and her cheering supporters for the last five minutes, declaring the election a victory. Her election, she means. Because right behind are two giant monitors that keep flashing the pro-Bush vote count from Fla and OH. Yet, she makes no mention of that.
Kerry is also ahead in the race to win this state -- at least in the early returns. Rep. Berkeley doesn't mention that either. Talk about a "safe seat."
Inside this bubble, meanwhile, I know less than any of you reading this. It seems that, alas, it has come down to Florida and Ohio just as the Conventional Wisdom has been predicting.
